Shared parental pay: Parliamentary Bill announced!

BREAKING: There’s going to be a Parliamentary Bill to change the law on shared parental pay for the self-employed! [1]

This is a huge step forward and we’ve been fighting to get this in front of MPs for a while. We now have the opportunity to make the change happen for thousands of families across the country. So we need to make sure that MPs vote the right way.

We’ve got a three step plan to make this happen. First step is making sure MP’s notice it exists and that people care about it. That's why on February 21st, when the bill gets ‘introduced’ in the House of Commons, we’re organising an event outside. Together, we'll show how many people want shared parental pay for the self-employed.

To make this happen, we need a licence from the council and things like placards and banners to get our message across. Will you chip in to make this event a reality?

Right now self-employed parents are not eligible for Shared Parental Pay (ShPP). Mums get Maternity Allowance if they’re self-employed, but this offers no financial support for self-employed fathers or same-sex partners wanting to share childcare.

This new bill would change that. Giving all self-employed parents access to shared parental pay. It would allow parents more flexibility to spend important time with their kids whilst successfully running their businesses. Plus, ShPP doesn't claim any more money from the government than mums are currently entitled to.

From newspapers to the general public, we need to draw as much attention to this vote as we can, because that’s how we bring in even more support and influence even more MPs. We’ll invite journalists and broadcasters from all the main news channels to cover the event - so we need to make sure it looks as impactful as possible.

From the 5,000 signatures on the petition to the dozens of feet - and pram wheels! - at the marches, thousands of actions from the Organise community have brought us to this point. [2] We’re at the key moment and we need to do everything we can to help push the decision over the line.

To do that, we're coming together to show MPs how much this matters. But we won’t be able to without the licence or the banners. Please chip in a few pounds to make this important event a reality:

Together, we’ve built up all this pressure and the next month is the perfect time to use it.

Thanks for being involved,

Olga and the Organise team

PS. Wondering what the other two parts of our three step strategy to get shared parental pay for the self-employed are?

  • Step two will be sending hundreds of emails to our MPs before this bill gets a second reading (and MPs get their first chance to vote on it).
  • And step three will be hosting an event inside Parliament (emailing our MPs to ask them to come along) to explain how important this law change would be to the millions of self-employed families.

Thanks for everything you’ve done so far, and I hope you’ll be involved every step of the way to getting a historic win.
